Jacob, by his mother’s counsel, obtaineth his father’s blessing instead of Esau. And by her is advised to fly to his uncle Laban.
“God give thee the dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth, abundance of corn and wine.” (Genesis 27:28)
God gives us the dew of Heaven and the fatness of the earth through his Word and providing for us spiritual strength, joy and hope.
“The dew of heaven and the fatness of the earth, that is, the Word, was given to us by the Father, together with the participation through the Spirit, and therefore we were made participants in the divine nature through him. And we also received plenty of grain and wine, that is, strength and happiness. In fact, it is said truly, ‘Bread strengthens the heart of man, and wine makes glad his heart.’ Bread is the symbol of spiritual strength, wine of the physical. They are given to those who are in Christ through him.” (4) -St. Cyril
The Catechism of the Catholic Church 459 states: The Word became flesh to be our model of holiness: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me.” “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me.” On the mountain of the Transfiguration, the Father commands: “Listen to him!” Jesus is the model for the Beatitudes and the norm of the new law: “Love one another as I have loved you.” This love implies an effective offering of oneself, after his example.
“And let peoples serve thee, and tribes worship thee: be thou lord of thy brethren, and let thy mother’s children bow down before thee. Cursed be he that curseth thee: and let him that blesseth thee be filled with blessings.” (Genesis 27:29)
Issac’s blessing shows the blessings reserved to those who are in Christ, for he is Lord of all and his everlasting kingdom is in Heaven.
Afterward the power of blessing is transferred again to the Immanuel himself. ‘And let nations serve you, and princes bow down to you, and be lord of your brother.’ The Immanuel was called ‘the firstborn’ when he became so with reference to us, ‘among many brothers.’ But for this reason we must not forget that he is God and the Lord of the universe.” (4) -St. Cyril
