Jacob and Esau meet: Jacob goeth to Salem, where he raiseth an altar.
“Then Esau ran to meet his brother, and embraced him: and clasping him fast about the neck, and kissing him, wept.” (Genesis 33:4)
Fr. Mike Schmitz commented on Jacob and Esau’s meeting: Jacob brings a gift, a blessing to Esau, as an act of restoration. In this broken story, we can see the hope of reconciliation and forgiveness.
We see the need for reconciliation and forgiveness in relationship with God and our neighbor.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states in paragraph 1455:
“The confession (or disclosure) of sins, even from a simply human point of view, frees us and facilitates our reconciliation with others. Through such an admission man looks squarely at the sins he is guilty of, takes responsibility for them, and thereby opens himself again to God and to the communion of the Church in order to make a new future possible.”
Discussion: How have we seen a lack of forgiveness harmful to future generations?
Forgiveness is the law of love.
“He who knows how to forgive prepares for himself many graces from God. As often as I look upon the cross, so often will I forgive with all my heart.” -St. Faustina
“For if you will forgive men their offences, your heavenly Father will forgive you also your offences. But if you will not forgive men, neither will your Father forgive you your offences.” (Matthew 6:14-15)
